Essex Care Consortium - Individual Empowerment

ACTIVITIES AND LIFE STYLE

Covid 19 has had a huge effect within the care sector. We maintained our activities and lifestyle to the best of our ability during this period, following all government and Public Health England guidelines. We will continue to be mindful of Covid developments in the future.

We have an Activities and Wellbeing coordinator 32 hours a week for 5 clients. Our 6th client has her support from her 1.1 allocated hours.

We have a person-centred philosophy, which combines and integrates both learning and wellbeing with equal importance in supporting people to move forward. All activities focus on the individual’s abilities and interests, which helps to build confidence and self-esteem. We believe in empowering our students and staff support monthly group meetings where students discuss their activities for the following month and are encouraged to share their own ideas.

We are an Inclusive Communication environment, which means we use speech, Makaton (sign language), gesture, photographs, symbols, drawings and objects of reference to interact and improve communication with each client.

Regular activities include arts & crafts, exercise, swimming, music, cookery, personal health care, playing and understanding indoor games. We explore a number of themed subjects with literacy, numeracy and life skills embedded in the subject matter. As the clients show more interest and become excited to understand and display their work the knowledge that they have gained becomes more transparent.

We offer a wide range of outdoor, activities which include horticulture, swimming in our outdoor heated pool, woodland walks, conservation, tennis, horse-riding, shopping, trampolining, visiting the Zoo, garden centres, local pubs, cinema, bowling, trips to the beach, picnics, visiting new towns and places and trips on local transport.

Our home is family orientated and focuses on activities that involve families and friends of the clients such as BBQs, pool parties, special seasonal events. Family Fun Day (Summer), Christmas celebrations with families, Easter celebrations and much more.

The staff concentrate on each individual’s personal choices and needs. Every step is monitored so that small outcomes can become big achievements.
